London’s QEII Centre has once again provided the stage for a significant moment in modern British politics as the new Conservative leader was announced on Monday, 5 September.

Liz Truss was revealed as the new leader of the Conservative Party in the QEII’s Churchill event space as 700 people, including Conservative party members, MPs and press eagerly gathered to hear the result of the hotly contested ballot. Boris Johnson will now officially tender his resignation and the Queen will be asked to appoint Liz Truss as Prime Minister on Tuesday, 6 September.

Since the centre opened in 1986, the QEII has welcomed world leaders, heads of state and global icons as well as some of the greatest minds of the 21st Century.

Both its location in the heart of Westminster opposite the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey and its world-class facilities has made the QEII an ideal location for many significant events and announcements. It has hosted numerous political conferences and was also the chosen venue when Boris Johnson was announced as Prime Minister in 2019.

Mark Taylor, chief executive of the QEII Centre, said: “Thanks to our unrivalled location, world-class facilities, capacity and security, the QEII offers the gravitas to deliver events of this significance. It is wonderful to see the centre once again being placed under the global spotlight as we showcase the expertise of the British events industry.”
